Chopped Cheese anyone?

If you’re wondering what a Chopped Cheese sandwich is, don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s not as mainstream as it’s cousins, the classic cheeseburger, cheesesteak, or sloppy joe. It’s actually a hybrid of all of these, and we’re here to tell you that it’s delicious.

So, here’s a little Burger-inspired history lesson for you…

It all started in the big apple – New York. We consider it Schweid & Sons’ hometown, so it’s no wonder we have an affection for this creation. The chopped cheese originated as an easy lunchtime offering in the corner bodegas that are fixtures around the city. The key to a great chopped cheese sandwich is premium ground beef (like Schweid & Sons CAB Custom Blend Chuck Brisket or CAB Butcher’s Blend) chopped up on a hot flat grill. Add sautéed onions, and finish off with melted cheese,  lettuce, tomato, and your condiment of choice on a classic “hero” roll. Our team thinks the key is in toasting the roll and pairing the meat and veggies with mayo, but really there’s no wrong way to dress it.

Ask any real New Yorker and they’ll tell you the chopped cheese sandwich is truly part of the city’s culture. Four generations of Schweid & Sons can’t be wrong!
